DENT© Hierarchy of Awareness Values (HAV)

The purpose of the Hierarchy of Awareness Values (HAV) is to enable us to place our values on a continuum of depth of confidence. In DENT©, the quality of confidence is the extent to which we feel able to express the part of us that is most important to us.

To that extent, HAV is a Leadership Model, in so much as, it is not necessary to have followers to be a leader, though it is necessary for us to straightforwardly address our challenges. The mastery of self-leadership is an imperative and is a necessary pre-requisite for the leadership of others.

Solidity, Mutuality & Purposefulness flow from having clarity on our values. No value has more inherent importance than another. We are all focused on what is uniquely important to ourselves.

Instead, the Hierarchy enables us to develop a set of beliefs (‘temporary assumptions about the way things work’), that then guide our actions. These actions will be consistent with our overarching and more enduring values.

Table of Hierarchy of Awareness Values (HAV)

Attendance

Serving your purpose by being available to your stakeholders

Interdependence

Aligning with others to work in mutuality of common purpose

Congruence

Integrating personal meaning with social demands

Independence

Making good sense of life to self-lead purposefully

Difference

Developing the need to feel good about yourself as an individual

Dependence

Satisfying the need for belonging and conformity

Sustenance

Getting your base needs met

An overriding assumption behind the DENT© Model is that individuals are sufficiently healthy to advance and grow. This means that they are clear about, or aware of, how they respond to their values around Sustenance and Dependence.

It is the anecdotal experience of the DENT© researchers, that individuals tend to concentrate their values around expressing Independence. Values related tensions also arise between the HAVs of Difference and Congruence. At the same time, many of us aspire to express Interdependence and Attendance, but this can also present challenges.
